Ingredients

  • 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • 3 cups water or milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional)
  • 1/2 cup fresh or dried fruits
  • 2 tablespoons nuts or seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Bring water or milk to a gentle boil in a saucepan.
  2. Add salt and stir in the steel-cut oats.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. Cook for 20–25 minutes until the oats reach a creamy consistency. Add more liquid if needed.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in honey or maple syrup and butter if using.
  6. Serve warm and top with fruits, nuts, seeds, and optional cinnamon or vanilla.

Notes

  • Use milk instead of water for a creamier texture.
  • Add a splash of cream at the end for extra richness.
  • For savory oats, skip sweeteners and add cheese, herbs, or eggs.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Reheat with a splash of liquid to restore creaminess.
