A classic, comforting blackberry cobbler featuring sweet-tart blackberries baked beneath a tender, golden topping. This rustic dessert is easy to prepare and perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

  • 5 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Place the blackberries in a 9-inch baking dish and toss with 1/2 cup sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and optional cinnamon.
  4. Stir in the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract until a smooth batter forms.
  5. Spoon or pour the batter evenly over the blackberry mixture.
  6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the berry filling is bubbling around the edges.
  7. Remove from the oven and allow the cobbler to cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.
  8. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Frozen blackberries can be used directly from the freezer; add a few extra minutes to the baking time if needed.
  • Mix blackberries with blueberries, raspberries, or peaches for a fruit variation.
  • Add a pinch of nutmeg or extra cinnamon for a warmer spice flavor.
  • Sprinkle coarse sugar over the batter before baking for a crisp, sparkling topping.
  • Orange zest can be substituted for part of the lemon zest for a citrus twist.
  • The cobbler is best served warm but can also be enjoyed at room temperature.
