Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • 2 tbsp shortening or butter
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying

Optional Toppings:

  • Honey
  • Powdered sugar
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Syrup

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using).
  2. Cut in shortening or butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add warm water and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead briefly until smooth, then cover and let rest for 15–20 minutes.
  5. Roll out dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  6. Cut into squares or triangles.
  7. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat.
  8. Fry dough pieces until they puff and turn golden brown, flipping once.
  9. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  10. Serve warm with desired toppings.

Notes

  • Ensure oil is hot enough for proper puffing.
  • Roll dough evenly to help them rise.
  • Add cinnamon or anise for extra flavor.
  • For savory versions, omit sugar and serve with cheese or sauces.
  • Reheat in oven to restore crispiness.
