These Stovetop Chicken Street-Style Tacos are loaded with bold, authentic Mexican flavor and come together in under 30 minutes. Juicy chicken breasts or thighs are marinated in lime and spices, seared on the stovetop, and served in warm corn tortillas with onion, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. Perfect for Taco Tuesday or quick weeknight dinners!

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 small corn tortillas
  • 1/2 cup diced white onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • Lime wedges, for serving
  • Optional toppings: Cotija cheese, salsa, guacamole, hot sauce

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together olive oil, lime juice, garlic, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add chicken and toss to coat well. Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes (up to overnight for deeper flavor).
  3. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook for 5–6 minutes per side until golden and internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  4. Transfer chicken to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes. Then slice thinly or chop into bite-sized pieces.
  5. Warm corn tortillas in the same skillet or directly over a gas flame until pliable and slightly charred.
  6. Assemble tacos by adding chicken to tortillas and topping with diced onion, chopped cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. Add any optional toppings you like.

Notes

  • Chicken thighs tend to stay juicier and offer more flavor than breasts.
  • Marinate longer (up to 24 hours) for maximum flavor infusion.
  • Substitute with flour tortillas or create taco bowls with rice or lettuce.
  • Spice it up with jalapeños or a spicy salsa of your choice.
  • Marinated chicken can be prepped in advance and stored in the fridge or freezer for meal prep.
