Stained Glass Window Cookies are colorful, buttery sugar cookies with melted hard candy centers that shine like stained glass. Perfect for the holidays or special occasions, these eye-catching treats are fun to bake, delicious to eat, and beautiful to display.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3040 hard candies (such as Jolly Ranchers or Life Savers, sorted by color and crushed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually mix dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a dough forms.
  5. Roll dough out to 1/4-inch thickness on a floured surface. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, then use smaller cutters to cut out centers.
  6. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets. Fill the center cutouts with about 1/2 teaspoon of crushed candy.
  7. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until edges are lightly golden and candy is fully melted.
  8. Cool completely on the baking sheet to allow candy centers to harden before moving.

Notes

  • Flavor dough with almond extract or citrus zest for variety.
  • Sprinkle cookie edges with coarse sugar for sparkle.
  • Use seasonal cookie cutter shapes and candy colors to match the occasion.
  • Crush candy in a zip-top bag using a rolling pin for easy cleanup.
  • Poke holes before baking to use as edible ornaments.
