Smothered hamburger steaks are a hearty Southern comfort food featuring seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a savory onion and mushroom gravy. Served over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles, this skillet meal is rich, satisfying, and perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp minced onion
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, minced onion, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Shape into 4 equal-sized patties.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add sliced onion and garlic. Sauté until golden and fragrant.
  4. Stir in cream of mushroom soup, water, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix until smooth.
  5. Nestle patties into the gravy. Spoon sauce over each patty.
  6. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cover and cook for 20–25 minutes, until patties are fully cooked.
  7. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles, with extra gravy on top.

Notes

  • Swap cream of mushroom for cream of chicken or celery to vary the flavor.
  • Add sliced mushrooms with onions for extra depth.
  • A splash of heavy cream can be added to enrich the sauce.
  • Ground turkey or chicken works well as a leaner option.
  • Make your own sauce with fresh mushrooms, beef broth, and cream if avoiding canned soup.
