A hearty and flavorful twist on a classic, this Sloppy Joe Garlic Bread features seasoned ground beef simmered in a rich, tangy sauce, layered over crispy, buttery garlic bread, and topped with melty cheese.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced in half lengthwise
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and cook until softened, about 3–4 minutes.
  4. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  5. In a small bowl, mix melted butter with garlic powder and brush evenly over the cut sides of the French bread.
  6. Place the bread halves on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for about 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from the oven and spread the sloppy joe mixture evenly over both halves.
  8. Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the meat mixture.
  9. Bake for 10–12 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  10. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

  • Lightly toasting the bread before adding the filling helps prevent sogginess.
  • Ground turkey or chicken can be substituted for a lighter option.
  • Add diced bell peppers or grated carrots for extra texture and nutrition.
  • The sloppy joe mixture can be prepared up to 1 day in advance.
  • Reheat in a 350°F oven for best results to maintain crispness.
