Crispy and golden Amish onion fritters made with simple pantry staples and sweet onions, delivering a savory, comforting bite that is crunchy on the outside and tender inside.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet onions, finely chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Finely chop the onions and place them in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the onion mixture and stir until a thick batter forms.
  5. Heat about 1/2 inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, gently flattening with the back of a spoon.
  7. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and crisp.
  8. Transfer fritters to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil before serving.

Notes

  • Add paprika or garlic powder for extra flavor.
  • Mix in shredded cheddar for a cheesy variation.
  • Substitute part of the milk with buttermilk for a lighter texture.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a 375°F (190°C) oven for 8–10 minutes to restore crispiness.
