A quick and flavorful sautéed cabbage dish made with onions, garlic, and simple seasonings, lightly caramelized in a skillet for a comforting vegetable side.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups green cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onion and cook for about 3–4 minutes until softened and slightly translucent.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the thinly sliced cabbage to the skillet and toss gently so it coats with the oil and mixes with the onions.
  5. Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage softens and begins to lightly brown.
  6. Season the cabbage with salt, black pepper, and paprika while it cooks.
  7. Once the cabbage is tender but still slightly crisp, squeeze lemon juice over the top and stir well.
  8. Remove from heat and serve warm.

Notes

  • Green cabbage works best because it softens nicely while keeping a slight crunch.
  • Cook over medium heat and avoid overcrowding the pan to prevent steaming.
  • Add sliced carrots or bell peppers for more color and sweetness.
  • Cooked bacon or smoked sausage can be mixed in for additional flavor.
  • A splash of apple cider vinegar can be added at the end for extra tang.
  • Fresh herbs like parsley or dill can be sprinkled on top before serving.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat in a skillet over medium heat with a small splash of water or oil.
