Orange Hot Chocolate is a cozy, indulgent drink that blends rich, velvety cocoa with the bright, zesty flavor of orange. It’s quick to make and perfect for chilly days or festive gatherings — a sophisticated twist on a comforting classic.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk (whole milk preferred, or any milk of choice)
  • ¼ cup heavy cream (optional, for extra richness)
  • 2 oz dark or semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 12 tbsp sugar or honey, to taste
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • ¼ tsp orange extract or 1 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Whipped cream or marshmallows (optional, for topping)
  • Extra orange zest or chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk and heavy cream (if using) until hot but not boiling.
  2. Whisk in cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add chopped chocolate and stir until melted and fully incorporated.
  4. Stir in orange zest and orange extract or juice. Let simmer gently for 1–2 minutes to infuse flavors.
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness or orange flavor if desired.
  6. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream, marshmallows, or garnish as desired.

Notes

  • Add a cinnamon stick or pinch of nutmeg for a spiced twist.
  • Use milk chocolate for a sweeter, creamier version.
  • Substitute with oat or almond milk and skip cream for a dairy-free option.
  • Add a splash of orange liqueur like Grand Marnier for a festive adult version.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days and reheat gently before serving.
