This Onion-Wrapped Flying Dutchman Burger is a bold, bunless twist on a classic, perfect for low-carb or keto diets. Inspired by the In-N-Out secret menu, it features juicy beef patties, melty cheese, and grilled onions that act as the ‘bun’ for a messily delicious, flavor-packed experience—all in just 25 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb ground beef (80/20 blend preferred)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 slices cheese (American, cheddar, Swiss, or preferred)
  • 2 large yellow onions, sliced into thick rings
  • 12 tbsp olive oil or butter (for sautéing)
  • Optional toppings: mustard, pickles, hot sauce, tomato slices, burger sauce

Instructions

  1. Form the ground beef into two equal patties, slightly larger than your onion rings. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
  2. Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the thick onion rings for 3–4 minutes per side until golden and softened, keeping large rings intact. Set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, cook beef patties for 3–4 minutes per side or until your desired doneness.
  4. During the last minute of cooking, top one or both patties with cheese and allow it to melt.
  5. Assemble by sandwiching the beef and cheese between the largest grilled onion rings, pressing gently to wrap.
  6. Serve hot with desired toppings or dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Use the thick outer rings of the onion for best structure.
  • Try different cheeses or add-ins like mushrooms, jalapeños, or bacon for variety.
  • Top with keto-friendly sauces or fresh tomato slices for added flavor.
  • Alternatively, bake patties and onions at 400°F (200°C) until done, then assemble.
