This Old Fashioned Goulash is a nostalgic, one-pot comfort food classic made with tender macaroni, seasoned ground beef, and a rich tomato-based sauce. Hearty, simple, and packed with flavor, this American goulash is perfect for busy weeknights, family dinners, or cozy gatherings when you need something filling and satisfying.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb elbow macaroni
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • Garlic salt, black pepper, and chili powder to taste
  • Hot sauce, to taste
  • 2 cans (14.5 oz each) stewed tomatoes (with juices), crushed
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • Tomato juice (optional, for thinning the sauce)

Instructions

  1. Cook macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook ground beef and diced onion over medium heat until browned. Drain grease.
  3. Season with garlic salt, pepper, chili powder, and hot sauce. Stir well.
  4. In a bowl, crush stewed tomatoes and add them (with juices) to the meat mixture along with ketchup.
  5. Stir in cooked macaroni and combine until everything is evenly coated.
  6. Simmer for a few minutes to blend flavors. Add tomato juice if a looser consistency is desired.
  7. Taste and adjust seasonings before serving hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor and texture, add chopped green bell peppers or corn.
  • Make it cheesy by stirring in shredded cheddar or topping with mozzarella.
  • Ground turkey or Italian sausage can be substituted for beef.
  • The sauce thickens as it sits—add tomato juice or water when reheating.
