Mini Air Fryer Blooming Onions are a crispy, golden twist on the classic appetizer—lightened up and air-fried to perfection. These mini blooming onions are easy to prepare, fun to serve, and packed with savory flavor and crunch without the grease of deep frying.

Ingredients

  • 4 small onions (yellow or sweet)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Peel and trim the onions, keeping the root intact. Slice vertically around the onion to create petals.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk eggs and buttermilk until smooth.
  4. Pour breadcrumbs into a separate bowl; optionally season them.
  5. Dip each onion in seasoned flour, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs. Press gently to help the coating stick.
  6. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Spray onions with cooking spray and place them in the air fryer basket.
  8. Cook for 15–20 minutes, spraying again halfway through if needed, until crispy and golden.
  9. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra spice, add cayenne to the flour.
  • Panko crumbs yield a crispier texture.
  • Parmesan in the breadcrumb mix adds cheesy flavor.
  • Use flax eggs and plant milk for a vegan version.
  • Best served immediately but reheats well in the air fryer.
