Love swirl sugar cookies are soft, buttery cookies with vibrant pink, red, and white swirls, perfect for Valentine’s Day or any festive occasion. Their colorful patterns and sweet vanilla flavor make them as delightful to look at as they are to eat.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract (optional)
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Red and pink food coloring
  • Sprinkles (optional, for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using).
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  6. Divide the dough into 2 or 3 equal parts. Tint each with red or pink food coloring as desired, leaving one part uncolored for contrast.
  7. Roll each colored dough into ropes, twist them together gently, and roll into a single log.
  8. Slice the log into cookies or roll and slice into spirals for a swirl effect.
  9. Place cookies on prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart. Optionally, roll edges in sprinkles before baking.
  10. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until the edges are just set but not browned.
  11. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2–3 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

  • Chill the dough for 20–30 minutes if it feels too soft or sticky before shaping.
  • Get creative with color schemes for different holidays or events.
  • Roll dough in sprinkles before baking for added texture and color.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for longer storage.
  • Warm cookies for a few seconds in the microwave to refresh texture.
