A classic homemade bread recipe with a soft, fluffy interior and a perfectly golden crust, ideal for sandwiches, toast, or serving with soups and pasta dishes.

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture and melted butter or oil into the flour mixture.
  4. Mix until a dough forms, then knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  7. Place the dough into a greased loaf pan and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake the bread for 30 to 35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Allow the bread to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Use fresh yeast for the best rise and texture.
  • The water should be warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
  • Replace part of the flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.
  • Add garlic powder, herbs, cheese, or seeds for extra flavor.
  • Store in an airtight container or bread bag for up to 4 days.
  • Freeze slices individually for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat slices in a toaster or oven for a fresh-baked texture.
