Hearty Onion Gravy Round Steak is classic comfort food featuring tender, slow-cooked beef smothered in rich mushroom-onion gravy. Perfect for the Instant Pot, Crock Pot, or oven, this budget-friendly recipe delivers savory flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture—ideal for family dinners, Sunday gatherings, or cozy weeknights.

Ingredients

  • 46 slices round steak (about 2 lbs)
  • 2 pouches onion gravy mix
  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 2 cups diced mushrooms
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Instant Pot Method: Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet; sear steak slices 2–3 minutes per side until browned. In the Instant Pot on sauté mode, melt remaining butter; cook onion, mushrooms, and garlic until soft and golden. Dissolve onion gravy mix in hot water; add to pot with seared steak. Cook on Meat/Stew setting for 20 minutes on high pressure; quick release. Rest 5 minutes before serving with gravy.
  2. Crock Pot Method: Optional: Sear steak for richer flavor. Layer onions, garlic, and mushrooms in Crock Pot; place steak on top. Pour gravy mixture over everything; cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4–5 hours until tender.
  3. Oven Method: Sear steak and sauté vegetables as above. Place all ingredients in a Dutch oven; add gravy and cover tightly. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 2–2.5 hours until fork-tender.
