Ingredients

  • For the Steaks:
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • pounds ground beef (90% lean)
  • ⅓ cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, Italian seasoning, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, egg, salt, and pepper until just combined. Shape into 4 patties.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sear patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove from skillet and keep warm.
  3. In the same skillet, melt butter and add mushrooms. Sauté for 5–6 minutes until browned and tender.
  4. Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and stir to coat. Slowly pour in beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce and let gravy simmer for 3–4 minutes until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Return hamburger steaks to skillet, spoon gravy over the top, and simmer for 2–3 minutes.
  7. Serve hot with extra gravy on top.

Notes

  • Add a splash of heavy cream or sour cream for a creamier gravy.
  • Sauté onions with mushrooms for added flavor.
  • Pair with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
  • Use cremini or white button mushrooms for best texture and flavor.
