A bold and hearty sandwich inspired by Philly cheesesteak and classic sloppy joes. This recipe combines savory ground beef, sautéed onions and peppers, rich seasonings, and melted provolone cheese served on soft toasted buns for a comforting and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 1 tbsp water
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Sliced mushrooms (optional)
  • Extra sautéed onions (optional)
  • Hot sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and bell pepper and cook for about 4–5 minutes until softened.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground beef and cook while breaking it apart with a spoon until fully browned.
  5. Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Pour in the beef broth and allow the mixture to simmer for several minutes.
  7. Add the cornstarch slurry and stir until the sauce thickens and coats the beef.
  8. Place slices of provolone cheese on top of the beef mixture and allow them to melt.
  9. Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto toasted hamburger buns and serve warm.

Notes

  • Add sliced mushrooms while sautéing the onions and peppers for deeper flavor.
  • Ground turkey can be used instead of beef for a lighter option.
  • Provolone can be substituted with mozzarella or white American cheese.
  • Spread garlic butter on the buns before toasting for extra richness.
  • Store leftover meat mixture in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • The cooked filling can be frozen for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat in a skillet with a splash of broth if the mixture becomes too thick.
  • Assemble sandwiches fresh when serving for the best texture.
