A creamy homemade French onion dip made with sweet caramelized onions blended into a rich mixture of sour cream, cream cheese, and mayonnaise for a fresh and flavorful appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium yellow onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives or parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the finely chopped onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally.
  3. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes until the onions become soft, golden, and caramelized.
  4. Remove the onions from heat and allow them to cool completely.
  5. In a mixing bowl, combine sour cream, softened cream cheese, and mayonnaise.
  6. Stir until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
  7. Fold in the cooled caramelized onions.
  8. Add garlic powder, salt, and black pepper and mix until well combined.
  9. Transfer the dip to a serving bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  10. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley before serving if desired.

Notes

  • Sweet onions such as Vidalia can be used for a milder, sweeter flavor.
  • Allow onions to cool before mixing to prevent melting the creamy ingredients.
  • A small amount of grated Parmesan can add extra savory flavor.
  • Greek yogurt can replace part of the mayonnaise or cream cheese for a lighter dip.
  • A pinch of onion powder can enhance the onion flavor.
  • Serve with potato chips, crackers, toasted bread, or fresh vegetables.
