Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a seasonal snack.

Ingredients

  • For the donuts:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup applesauce or 1/2 cup finely grated apple
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the crumb topping:
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a donut pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix brown sugar, applesauce or grated apple, egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
  4. Gently stir the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  5. Spoon the batter into a donut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 full.
  6. In a separate bowl, prepare crumb topping by mixing flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in cold butter until the mixture is crumbly.
  7. Sprinkle crumb topping over batter and press down lightly so it adheres.
  8. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  9. Let cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Press crumb topping into batter to help it stick during baking.
  • Chopped apple pie filling can replace applesauce—reduce added sugar slightly.
  • Use a muffin tin if a donut pan is unavailable.
  • Best apple varieties: Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala.
  • Freeze donuts individually up to 2 months for later enjoyment.
