Creamy steel-cut oats are a warm, hearty breakfast made by slowly simmering oats with water and milk until thick and rich. This nourishing dish has a slightly chewy texture and can be easily customized with sweet toppings like fruit, nuts, honey, or spices.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup steel-cut oats
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon butter, optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, optional

Instructions

  1. Bring the water and salt to a gentle boil in a medium saucepan.
  2. Stir in the steel-cut oats and reduce the heat to low.
  3. Let the oats simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. Once the oats begin to soften and thicken, add the milk and continue cooking for 3–5 minutes until creamy.
  5. Taste and add honey or maple syrup for sweetness if desired.
  6. Stir in butter and cinnamon if using.
  7. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • Steel-cut oats have a heartier and chewier texture than rolled oats.
  • Cook a larger batch and store portions for quick breakfasts during the week.
  • If the oats become too thick, stir in additional milk or water when reheating.
  • Add toppings like berries, bananas, apples, nuts, or seeds for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • For a richer texture, stir in Greek yogurt or a splash of cream before serving.
  • Spices such as nutmeg, cardamom, or vanilla extract add warm flavor.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
