Classic Chocolate Snowball Cookies are rich, buttery bite-sized treats with deep chocolate flavor, a tender crumb, and a snowy powdered sugar coating. Perfect for the holidays or anytime you need a cozy, chocolatey cookie.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (plus more for rolling)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
  • 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips or chopped chocolate (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together butter and 1/2 cup powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Mix in vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually add to the butter mixture, mixing until combined.
  4. Fold in chopped nuts and chocolate chips if using.
  5. Roll dough into 1-inch balls and place on prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until set but still soft-looking on top.
  7. Let cookies cool for 5 minutes, then roll in powdered sugar while warm. Cool completely and roll again in powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Chilling the dough for 15–30 minutes helps prevent spreading.
  • Use Dutch-process cocoa for a deeper chocolate flavor and darker color.
  • Skip nuts for a nut-free version or try almond extract for a twist.
  • Freeze baked cookies or dough balls for easy make-ahead baking.
