Rich chocolate sandwich cookies filled with a creamy orange-flavored frosting. The deep cocoa cookies pair beautifully with bright citrus filling, creating a balanced dessert that is both refreshing and indulgent.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 1 tbsp heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the softened butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until a smooth cookie dough forms.
  6. Scoop small portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each cookie.
  7. Bake for 10–12 minutes, then allow the cookies to cool completely.
  8. To prepare the filling, beat the softened butter with powdered sugar, orange zest, and orange juice.
  9. Add heavy cream and mix until the filling becomes smooth and spreadable.
  10. Spread or pipe the orange filling onto the bottom side of one cookie and top with another cookie to form a sandwich.

Notes

  • Orange extract can be used instead of fresh zest, but only a small amount is needed.
  • Do not overbake the cookies to keep them soft and tender.
  • Dipping half of the assembled cookies in melted dark chocolate adds extra richness.
  • A pinch of cinnamon or espresso powder can deepen the chocolate flavor.
  • Cookies can be baked ahead of time and assembled later.
