Chili Cheese Fries are the ultimate indulgent comfort food—crispy fries topped with hearty homemade chili and melty cheddar cheese. Perfect for game day, casual dinners, or when cravings strike, this easy recipe delivers bold flavor and irresistible texture in every bite.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag frozen French fries (or homemade fries)
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 oz) diced tomatoes or 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup kidney beans or black beans (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (or cheese blend)
  • Optional toppings: sour cream, green onions, jalapeños, chopped cilantro, hot sauce

Instructions

  1. Cook fries according to package instructions or bake/fry homemade fries until crispy.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground meat until browned. Drain excess fat if needed.
  3. Add onion and garlic; sauté until softened.
  4. Stir in tomatoes, beans (if using), chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Arrange fries on a large platter or baking sheet. Spoon hot chili over the fries.
  6. Top with shredded cheese and broil for 1–2 minutes until cheese melts and bubbles.
  7. Garnish with your favorite toppings and serve hot.

Notes

  • Use sweet potato fries for a sweet-savory twist.
  • Swap beef for plant-based crumbles for a vegetarian version.
  • Layer on nacho-style toppings like olives or diced tomatoes for extra flair.
  • Use a quick homemade cheese sauce for extra creaminess.
  • Prep chili in advance to save time on busy days.
