Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar (optional)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder (optional, for a cakier texture)
  • ½1 cup chocolate chips or chunks (optional)
  • Optional mix-ins: chopped nuts, crushed candy canes, peanut butter, caramel

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and let cool slightly. Mix with granulated and brown sugar until smooth.
  2. Whisk in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until combined.
  5. Fold in chocolate chips, nuts, or other mix-ins.
  6. Pour batter into a greased or parchment-lined 9×13-inch baking pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Cool completely before cutting into squares or shapes and packaging for gifts.

Notes

  • For festive flair, use holiday-shaped cookie cutters after brownies have cooled.
  • Don’t overbake—brownies should be moist in the center.
  • To keep brownies soft during storage, place a slice of bread in the container.
  • Ideal for wrapping in parchment or placing in decorative tins for gifting.
  • Easily made gluten-free by using a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
