Augapfel Cupcakes (Eyeball Cupcakes) are spooky Halloween treats made with moist cupcakes, creamy frosting, and creepy candy eyeballs. Perfect for parties or festive October baking, they combine playful decorations with delicious flavor.

Ingredients

  • For the cupcakes (chocolate or vanilla base):
  • 1¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for chocolate version)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup boiling water or hot coffee (for chocolate version only)
  • For the frosting and decoration:
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 tablespoons milk or cream
  • Food coloring (red, green, blue—for iris/veins)
  • Candy eyeballs or white chocolate discs
  • Red piping gel or strawberry jam (for blood effect)
  • Gel icing pens or edible markers (for iris/veins detailing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together dry ingredients. In another bowl, whisk wet ingredients.
  3. Combine wet and dry mixtures until smooth. Add boiling water or coffee (if making chocolate version).
  4. Divide batter evenly among liners (about ⅔ full).
  5. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely.
  6. In a mixing bowl, whip butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until light and fluffy.
  7. Frost each cupcake with a smooth white dome of frosting.
  8. Place a candy eyeball or chocolate disc in the center.
  9. Use colored gel or icing to add iris, veins, and red gel for bloody effects.
  10. Chill briefly to help set decorations before serving.

Notes

  • Use vanilla, red velvet, or pumpkin spice cupcakes for variation.
  • Add a surprise jam or ganache filling inside for a “bloody” effect.
  • Candy eyeballs, fondant, or DIY icing discs work well for the center.
  • Kids can help decorate with edible markers or gel pens.
  • For best presentation, decorate the same day as serving.
