Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a hearty, comforting casserole layered with seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, and a creamy soup sauce, baked to golden perfection for a no-fuss family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced or chopped
  • 45 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Butter or nonstick spray (for greasing dish)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet, cook ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until browned. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  3. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish and sprinkle with half the onion.
  4. Spoon half of the cooked ground beef over the potatoes.
  5. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, onions, and beef.
  6. In a bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth. Pour evenly over the entire dish.
  7. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  8. Remove foil and bake an additional 15–20 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender and top is golden.
  9. Let sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Swap cream of mushroom soup with cream of chicken or celery for a different flavor.
  • Add shredded cheese between layers or on top for a cheesy version.
  • Mix in corn or green beans for extra veggies.
  • Use frozen diced potatoes as a time-saving shortcut.
  • Freezes well—cool before freezing and thaw overnight to reheat.
