Flavorful air fryer chicken shawarma made with warm Middle Eastern spices, garlic, and lemon, producing tender chicken with a lightly crisp exterior perfect for wraps, bowls, or salads.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs or chicken breasts
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, cumin, paprika, coriander, turmeric, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper to make the marinade.
  2. If desired, add plain yogurt to the marinade for extra tenderness.
  3. Add the chicken to the bowl and coat thoroughly with the marinade.
  4. Cover and let the chicken marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C).
  6. Place the marinated chicken pieces in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
  7. Cook for 16 to 18 minutes, turning halfway through cooking for even browning.
  8. Remove the chicken once fully cooked and let it rest for a few minutes.
  9. Slice the chicken into thin strips.
  10. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve.

Notes

  • Chicken thighs stay juicier than chicken breasts during cooking.
  • Marinating longer enhances the depth of flavor.
  • Add smoked paprika or chili powder for a spicier variation.
  • Sliced onions and bell peppers can be air fried alongside the chicken.
  • A squeeze of fresh lemon juice brightens the flavor before serving.
  • Serve with pita bread, rice bowls, salads, or garlic yogurt sauce.
